Is Switchel the next big thing?

Image
Is #Switchel the next big thing after #Kambucha ? Switchel originated in the Caribbean, and had become a popular summer drink in the American Colonies in the late 17th century. By the 19th century, it had become a traditional drink to serve to thirsty farmers at hay harvest time, hence the nickname haymaker's punch. The recipe is very similar to that of ginger beer, where vinegar is replaced with lemon or lime juice and bacteria are added to induce fermentation.

Eat your Watercress

Image
Eat your watercress. So say researchers at New Jersey's William Paterson University who compiled a list of "powerhouse" foods based on their amounts of 17 crucial nutrients. They looked at both fruits and vegetables, but the latter dominated the list, notes the Washington Post. Watercress came in with a perfect score of 100, the only food to do so. Here is the top 10: Watercress (100) Chinese cabbage (91.99) Chard (89.27) Beet greens (87.08) Spinach (86.43) Chicory (73.36) Leaf lettuce (70.73) Parsley (65.59) Romaine lettuce (63.48) Collard greens (62.49)

Have you heard of Biopesticide?

Image
Researchers in Japan have discovered a way to selectively breed flightless ladybugs to be used as a “biopesticide” — a natural alternative to chemical pesticides. After selective breeding over 30 generations, a non-flying ladybug was developed. A company in Ibaraki Prefecture has started selling the flightless ladybug as a biopesticide for indoor use. According to a statement from the Biopesticide Industry Alliance, the ladybug has already reduced over 90% of the pest-damage to Japanese mustard spinach. We don't need toxic chemical pesticides on our food. READ : http://time.com/3110016/ladybug-biopesticide-pesticide-aphid-japan-agriculture/

Pesticides linked to Parkinson's risk

Image
STUDY: Pesticides Linked to Parkinson's Risk in People with Specific Gene. Several studies have linked pesticides with the development of Parkinson's disease, and now this newest 2014 study has found a specific gene that may explain why some people are particularly susceptible to developing Parkinson's after exposure to certain pesticides. One important part of the study was that the researchers had maps of pesticide use from the past 40 years available because of California laws requiring that pesticide use be reported. It would be difficult or impossible to repeat the study in another state, says Dr. Beate Ritz, a professor of epidemiology at University of California, Los Angeles and co-director of the school’s Center for Gene-Environment Studies in Parkinson's Disease. No toxic pesticides-use monitoring in other states. Yet another way the agrichemical industry and Big Ag gets away with doing damage to human & animal health and the environment. No tracea

Toxins in your Washing detergent

Image
The Birth of Laundry Detergents During WWII, the fats and oils that were used to make soap became scarce because they were being used instead to manufacture nitro-glycerine for explosives, and so another chemical source for cleaning agents had to be found. We were finding petroleum all over the place by this time, and scientists discovered that they could make thousands of new chemicals from this petroleum, including what they called detergents. Detergents soon became a regular household item because there was no alternative during WWII. Petrochemicals, which are the synthetic chemicals made out of petroleum, are found in the ingredients on laundry detergents such as fragrance, phthalates, artificial colors and NPEs. Corporate Brain ‘Wash’ Detergents are still much cheaper to manufacture than true soaps, and marketing has ensured that a majority of the population is absolutely convinced that detergents are safe to use. Would you be surprised to learn that the vast majority (great
